In Their Own Words

"I attended the workshop after my colleague recommended it. I had a vague sense of what budgeting meant but had never seen it explained alongside saving goals in the same session. The facilitator was clear and the reference guide has been on my desk since. It helped me understand what I was actually doing — and not doing — with my monthly income."

"The Literacy Programme was more structured than I expected. Each session built on the previous one, which made it easier to keep up even when the concepts were new to me. The group discussions were genuinely useful — hearing how others approached the same questions made things clearer. I would have liked slightly more time on the goal-setting module, but overall it was well worth it."

"What I appreciated most was that nobody tried to sell me anything. It sounds like a low bar but in my experience most financial talks end up being about products. Northgild kept it entirely conceptual. The toolkit has been particularly useful — I keep returning to the worksheets when I want to think through a decision properly."

"I signed up for the workshop first to see whether it was worth progressing to the full programme. It was. The workshop gave me enough of a foundation that the longer programme made sense to follow. The certificate at the end felt meaningful — it was tied to actual content, not just attendance."

"Attended with a colleague from the same office. The content was genuinely accessible — I had no prior knowledge and I kept up fine. The community space that comes with the toolkit is a nice addition; I have asked a few questions there and always got a clear, prompt response."

"I have been to a few talks about money management over the years. Most of them tell you things you already know in a vague way. Northgild's workshop was different because it explained the connections between concepts — why budgeting matters for goals, not just in the abstract. That framing genuinely changed how I thought about it."

Stories from Our Programmes

Planning Literacy Programme

From "I don't really have a system" to a clear framework

The starting point:

A 32-year-old civil servant from Johor Bahru joined the Planning Literacy Programme having managed her income on an informal basis for years. She described having no system — just a general sense of what she could and could not afford in a given month.

What changed:

By the third session, she had mapped out her cash flow across a month for the first time. The programme provided a framework she could apply immediately — not a set of rules, but a structure for thinking. She used the workbook worksheets to categorise her expenses and set a short-term savings target.

Her observation:
"I realised I had been approaching my finances one month at a time with no connecting thread. The programme gave me a way to see the bigger picture — and that changed how I approached smaller decisions."
Planning Toolkit & Community

A self-employed professional building structure into his planning

The starting point:

A freelance designer in his late twenties found his variable income made traditional monthly budgeting feel impractical. He had tried various templates found online but found them designed for salaried employees.

What changed:

The Toolkit provided worksheets specifically addressing income variability and how to think about planning across longer time horizons. The community space allowed him to ask specific questions about the concepts he was working through, and he received clear, concept-level responses.

His observation:
"The toolkit gave me materials built around flexibility rather than fixed salaries. That was exactly the gap I had been working around for three years."
